Finally decided what to do with my 55 gal. and its done.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hmm...i just think they look, im not too concerned with them hiding, thats what most of the fish in this tank do lol. Have you had them with other fish by any chance? Do they bother other fish?

The butterflies pay no attention to anything except food. They remind me of a miniature aro. I recently did the same thing kinda making different levels with rocks. it looks nice and gives everything a different dimension.

Well i think im gonna pick up a butterfly if the store still has any, if for no other reason than they look cool and wont hurt my Pike killis lol.
I agree, different levels in the substrate with rock work gives a tank alot more character and is so much nicer to look at than just plain flat sand lol. I think it also looks more natural and gives the fish more things to swim over/around.

Rinse your sand better or pick up a alrger grain size of sand. Look at your local masonry store. I buy mine there and they have 4 or 5 different sizes to choose from. Its the same as pool filter sand. Pools are not popular where im from its just my way to get it.

The sand in this tank is just plain play sand from HD. I found a bit of a trick to gettin it clear. Wash it in a bucket in small batches. Fill the bucket with water, and use your hand to stir the hell out of if so its swirling like a vortex, then while its still swirling dump the water out and with it goes all the particals small enough to still be suspended in the water (which are the ones that are gonna float up and cloud the water). If you do that a few times til very little stays suspended, then you are left with the heavier particals and you can put it in the tank.
I was going to use pool filter sand, but couldnt find it anywhere here, so this was the alternative.

@stopani88. Glad i could help. The water will still be cloudy for a bit when you put the sand in and fill it obviously, but if you washed it well enough it'll cleat up in a few hours to a day or so and should stay that way.

@PIE. Nothin new as of yet, but the a couple of the plants seem to be doin a lil better, the wisteria (i think thats what it is) is sending roots down from a couple of the branches of it, so i think its tryin to spread. Im pretty sure im gonna get an aftican butterfly to put in there next time i have a lil cash and make it to the store, ans still waitin on the angel guy to have another batch of fry.

Well i went to the store today to brab an afrian butterfly, and the only one they had left was all beat up and sick lookin, and they doubled the price tag on him :irked:
So i went ahead and picked up 4 lil angels instead of waiting on the breeder to have a batch. When i got home and dropped em in, the pike killi started hunting them, so i figured eh hes just checkin em out, he'll stop when he realizes they're too big to eat....WRONG the lil bastard grabbed one of the angels and drug it around the tank for a minute before i could scare him into lettin go of it. I gotta say i wasnt expecting him to grab an angel over half his size. So the angels are now in my feeder breeding tank with all the plants til they grow out some more.
The lil angel that got grabbed seems to be ok and happily swimming around with just a lil scratch on his side where the pike killi grabbed him, so he should be fine.
Here they are before the pike attack lol.
