This spring i'm getting another house and my new girl agreed to a pond.
Now i need some help with ideas for building one , i want something fairly large plan on stocking Koi and it will need to be heated in the winter (canadian winters).
Please post up pics and diy plans anything will help i'm a total newbee to ponds.

also is it ok to heat a pond or will i need a indoor setup for the winter??

what type of pond do you want to build? Raised? What materials are you looking to use. There are many options. Give us some info on materials, type etc. and we'll go from there

I'm want a sunken pond like the kind you see in bonsia gardens. from what i know i'm assuming that would need to be concrete lined in order to have it heated..
price range is as much as it takes type thing i'm a frugal person but like to do it right the first time.

I personally think that it would be better to use a pond liner only because I think it would be cheaper.

Thats a good thought do they come formed or do you use something in sheets that you can seal in the water, also how would that stand up in the winter or would the heated water be enough to keep the surrounding ground from freezing.

You can order custom sizes in different forms. Look for the closest EPDM liner sales since these things are heavy.

You'll want to dig deeper than the frost line to help with heating.

Heating depends on the size (gallonage) of the pond and it doesn't technically keep the surrounding ground from freezing.

How many and what size of koi are you wanting to keep. If it's only a few smaller ones you can overwinter them in a small indoor pond (kiddie pool in the basement?)

I thinking the heating is going be a problem now we just hit -20 without the wind chill.. I was thinking around 3 koi and a 1000g.
what about filtration .

Heating a pond in the winter is useless. I live near Chicago and heating ponds is a waste. A cow trough heater is used only to keep a small hole in the ice. That is for gas exchanges. Look at this website.
aquascapeinc.com I was at a training seminar yesterday and many questions were asked about overwinter fish and ponds. They are located in Chicago but have various locations all over the U.S. and CANADA. The phone number in Canada is ]866-y766-3t426. Sorry about the number. My keyboard is messed up. It is eight six six seven six six three four two six. They are a wholesaler but can probally hook you up with a retailer in your area.

Celcius right? (I didn't think y'all ahd hit 0* yet, better call my unckle in Hamilton and see if he's frozen yet :D ).

If your pond is large & deep enough the koi may over-winter there, but a 1000g (US or IMP) isn't going to be enough for 3 ten inch koi (over-wintering) You would have to be atleast 18" below the frost line and enough cubic feet at that depth to keep the fish in the low oxygen water. A two level pond (800g below the frost line & 1200 above) could be exceptable if you put in a good de-icer and/or aeration to keep the ice from freezing over completely.

Filtration...

Depends on if you have a fussy BOSS who likes things pretty or not :D .

A W/D made with a 55g plastic barrel could suffice, pump up into it and gravity feed back to the pond.

Of course only mechanical filtering is posible in the winter climates.
