I'm in Mass USA and building code frostline is about 4feet deep. Your frostline depth must be more. Better rent some power equipment! 
This is about the size and style i'm thinking.. also is there a problem with mosquito larva in theses ponds or does water movement keep that away?

If that's the style you want, go for the indoor tank of kiddie pond like some of the others here have done & let them vacation indoors for the winter (they'll grow faster to) it will make the pond developement easier.
As far as mosquito's go get some http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mosquitofish
Down here if there is a gallon of water there's a mosquito fish in it
. They work great and don't bother other fish in a pond!

Mosquito larva shouldn't be a problem. Fish will eat them and surface movement should keep the adults away. Don't use pestisides on your lawn either. Many beneficial bugs can control mosquitos naturally. Dragon flies eat a lot as well as bats. Install a bat box in a large tree, those guys can eat as many as 2000 mosquitos every night.
do you have a basement that you can run a W/D into? you could keep the tub in there (to keep from freezing) put a heater in THAT and run it back to the pond keeping a section of surface free from ice. just make sure that the line doen't freeze, ie tape the two lines together.
frost mark in uper illinois is 3'. so in ontario it'sprobably like 8' which will take your volume up to the needed depth to keep the koi over winter (maybe)
