Finally got my tank going (56K warning)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I watched the videos, it looks like the discus are in full control of the tank.

the photos do a lot better than the video at really doing your discus justice. But even so, I am sure they are a sight to see in real life.

They are still very shy when humans are around but for being new surroundings I am pleased with their behaviors. In a month they will own the tank, I'm sure. LOL

They are a little dark in the pictures, they are adjusting to the surrounding colors. I may have to pull the black background and go for a lighter blue one.

drop checker...isn't it cute??

Whats a drop checker and what does it do?

Very nice tank btw!

I completely tore up the old aquascape and removed a ton of plants. The remaining plant list consists of: Amazon Swords, Dwarf Red Lilys, Red Crypts, Giant Hygro, low grow Hygro, Blyxa japonica, dwarf saggitteria, some Phoenix Moss, and the Pogostemon Stellata. The discus went into the tank 3 weeks ago. I removed the black background and have some light Caribbean Blue background ordered. Please don't be frightened of the bears and moose walking across the tank...the discus have learned to cope, and I'm sure you can too. The big piece of wood got turned upside down to look like roots. I still have a lot of plants, but not so many tall ones. I wanted to open up some floor space so the discus could graze better by making some distance between plants and having plants that were more of stem plants so the Discus could get around the base of the plants for food. I got rid of all of the bunched plants except the Stellata Pogostemon.

The discus have only been with me for 6 weeks, and already I have a pair...well a trio. The 2 Red Scribbled are a pair and the FlachenXsnakeskin male is the third. These discus have GROWN LIKE WEEDS!! I only kept them in QT for 3 weeks because it made me nervous having 8-4 inch discus in a 40 gallon tank, so I opted to take my chances in the big tank. I am making weekly 85 to 90% water changes with water that is heated aerated and aged for 7 days. The don't miss a beat during a water change. I also vacuum the substrate and clean the canister filters weekly. My clean up crew of shrimp, snails, bn plecos, and corydora are doing a great job of keeping the joint clean. I dose the tank with fertilizer daily using PPS-Pro and am running Co2. I added 2 power heads to the tank and a protein skimmer. Also took off the glass lids for better lighting. (Every morning I warily look for a crusty dried up fish behind the tank...luckily I have found none yet!!) They have gotten very friendly and are not frightened of me. The come to the front of the tank when I approach it. I love that! I'm going to guess the trio are around 5.5 inches and the other around 5 inches. It's like I turned around and they were big!
