I think part of the problem here is they were in way way too small of a tank to start with. They probably would have attacked anything that got added because of a lack of space. Once they realize that the inverts can be food they won't ever stop. The key is getting the fish young and hoping they haven't learned that inverts are food and will just take your fare as the only food available.
