Finally joining the club

Just waiting for the new pump to come in, should be here tomorrow. I still have a bit of work to do on the canopy still, I'm re-doing the front, sealing the wood inside, and making mounts for the lights- and then painting it. Hopefully I'll get some more time to work on it tuesday. Tank has just been sitting stagnant with the stuff in it, that driftwood, even though I washed it, turned the water pretty dark. Wonder if it's still leaching tannins?

Looking good! I ended up getting a garden hose and hook it up to my shower to refill my tank. I use a submersible pump to remove water. I like it a lot better than using a python. Glad you have an understanding spouse.

Holy cow, I got my mag 12 pump in today. 10000% impressed. I'd compare it with my old pump, like driving a rolls royce vs 70's muscle car. Can't hear it running and is just as powerful. I turned on the little giant and wifey asked if the house was going to explode. She didn't even know I had this one turned on.
Got the plumbing tuned properly too. Had to adjust the input from the pump, just a bit too much flow to the tank. I'll eventually T the flow to go thru a canister returning ot the sump for additional mech filtration. Got the full-siphon tuned right, turned the emergency drain into a tuneable durso. I'm greatly please at just how quiet this thing is.
Treated the water, raised the temp to same as my other tanks (77.5deg F) used the microbe-lift instant setup and cycle kit and threw 5 of my platies in. Hopefully all goes well.

Found out one of my lights somehow went to poop just sitting in the room. I tested it a month ago when it arrived, put it back in the box and stashed it in a room. Hooked it up over the tank today, went to turn on the circuit with two t-5's. one bulb didn't light at all the other you could see trying, but then it all went pop-fizzle-buzz and I could smell the ballast burning. Bulb is bad and so is ballast now. e-mailed aquatraders hopefully they can help since it's been less than 30 days since I received the units.

I'll take some vids of the setup and whatnot tomorrow and post em.

I think I need to do a WC.....
Is it possible decaying crud in my logs/rocks are causing my ammonia to be so high? I doubt 5 teeny platies in 200g would cause this much ammonia, and I even did a 70% WC last night.

On the good side, had a power outage for a bit today, and everything cycled back how it's supposed to. Also one of my platies decided he likes the overflow better than the rest of the tank... i've pulled him out twice so far.
I may try the megaoverflow on this.

I re-tuned the pipes, opened the inflow all the way and re-adjusted the full-syphon. Now I had 2 additional problems- Overflow chamber now loud, and pump has air in it that won't go away.

So I at least fixed one part, modified the overflow.

Previous owner had already pulled out every-other tooth from the overflow barrier like so

While this worked well for the 600gph he had going through it, the 1000 or so I'm running through was overpowering the slits, and the one side had wide opening for the inflow pipe which made a ton of noise.

So I followed the mega-flow overflow mod to a degree, http://www.dursostandpipes.com/popular-modifications/5-mega-flow-overflow-modification.

I just hot glued some gutter guard stuff to the place where the teeth work, and made sure it was all angled so the water wouldn't shoot out and splash everywhere. Still makes a tad bit of noise, but once the canopy goes on I'm sure it'll not be noticable.

Still don't know what to do about the pump being noisy. It sounds just like there's a few air bubbles stuck in the impeller chamber, but I just can't shake em loose. Tried turning the pump all different directions with it off or on, tried surging the pump by pulling and plugging in power quickly.. Just don't know hwat to do. Any help here guys?

Also added some bacteria stuff to help some more, I've used it in the past with good success.
