I had a mag drive 18 that was very noisy. You could hear it from any room in the house. I used it for 3 weeks and tried everything to quiet it down. I ended up replacing it with 2 quiet one 4000 pumps and it's just sitting in a box.

I read somewhere that the lack of backpressure is causing the pump to cavitate. I suppose this is why when I close the valve on the pump output partially the sound goes away. Too bad it really decreases the flow, if it the pump doesn't operate properly at fully capacity, they should put that on the packaging.

Is it possible that you are getting microbubbles from the sump since your filter bags are so close to the end of the sump that feeds to the input of your pump?

Very nice!!! Did you ever work out the problem with the noisy pump?

Ahh, life is good.

Did you get the noisy pump figured out? Is it possible you have some sand stuck in the impellar chamber? I've heard lots of people say that their Mag Drives are noisy. I have a Laguna Max-Flo (their largest model) and it's really quiet and super efficient...might be worth looking into buying one and keeping the Mag as a back-up...if the wife gives you any grief about spending more cash on the setup, tell her it will save you money in the long run since it's more efficient (which is true).
