Finally ready to start keeping 'real' cichlids...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I’d suggest a sev but I get the feeling you like your plants lol
Acara is a good fish.

It's very tempting to want to add fish to a tank. Are you willing to get a bigger tank(s) down the road? Although the tapajos are slow growers they will eventually (if properly cared for ) get bigger than 6 inches. I count 6 tapajos in there at least. You have to consider your "eventual" bioload when those fish grow out. That bristlenose pleco will produce a lot of waste as it grows. You may want to consider leaving well enough alone. With patience you will get some breeding activity in there which will provide plenty of entertainment. Also as the tapajos grow out their color and fins will improve dramatically. You already have your centerpiece fish.

Thanks guys, you absolutely rock! Really great ideas from everyone.

I'm almost split into three or four possibilities now which I'll decide on once I've received the Geos and owned them awhile.

1) Acaraholics Anonymous: Find a wild form blue acara as a centerpiece.
2) Swarms Of The Things: Keep the Geos as the centrepiece fish and add a group of tetras, pencil fish or hatchetfish for the mid and upper levels.
3) Gone Catfishin': Add some flag tail cats or similar as mid level non cichlid additions.
4) Throw Caution To The Wind: Add a tank busting chocolate or a time bomb GT. (In truth, I probably won't do this. Probably.)

In the meantime, I cycle and await some gorgeous new Geos. ?

LOL if you do get a chocolate in the future, prepare for another big tank! Here's my female choc Bobo last year. She's hanging out of an 8 inch net and is even bigger now. Like lifting a brick.

Aussieman you are almost certainly right! And the chocolate cichlid was always a silly idea.

Still, I've a breeding Apisto tank just next to this one. A couple of dwarf cichlids couldn't hurt... Or a little plec... Or... Or... Oh no, look what happened!

Maybe something small and shy is the best I should hope for. A sort of hidden surprise amidst the chaos of active Tapajos?

Yup, I'd need a bigger tank for that beast! That's an impressive specimen. ?

Bobo grew pretty fast. Not quite like an Oscar, but in spurts. She's about 3 yrs and went from 4" to 10 1/2" last year. Right now she's in a holding tank with one of my hrps. By this summer she'll be in a 125 with some buddies. Looks like she's pushing 11", but I won't know for sure until I take her out.
