Finally trying discus. Maybe.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
for juvi discus there i no such thing as overfiltering. also don't use serpae tetras with any size discus. to rambunctious and nippy for delicate fish. the best tankmates i've seen for discus that worked out well are rummy nose tetras and corydoras species.

I'm not going bare bottom. I hate the way it looks. I'm going to use the NLS discus food. The bamboo and water changes will keep the tank more than clean enough.

no point in giving you advice anymore since you "seem" to know what youre doing.

but this is for the lurkers

water change alone isnt enough you need to go barebottom to remove ALL the gunk that is at the bottom of the tank. overtime food crap and other things gets trap under the gravel/mixes with the sand and before you know it your 2 inch discus is still at 2 inch and looks more like a football than a discus.

edit: if you hate the way bare bottom looks buy 6 inch shw discus if you dont want to safe your money and the fish life and dont try keeping discus

wait... what causes the peppering? i thought it was a fish coloration thing like they were born with it

peppering is a result of pigeon blood. theres debates whether peppering shows up more with dark substrate and background.

i disagree there is a point to where more filtration does nothing and you also run the risk of having your fish get stuck in the intake tube

I rubberbanded fishnet around the intake on mine so it will suck water but not fish

a powerful enough pump can still suck the fish and have it stuck in the net. when dealing with juvie sponge filter is the best way to go

Yeah juvies fry or little delicate fish need sponge

I am in a similar boat as you. I was hesitant about starting discus but I took the plunge. I have a 55 gallon sand bottom with plants and am growing out the discus just fine. They are not as hard as they are cut out to be. Why spend hundrends of dollars on adult discus and special water treatment when you can get Juvies to raise and grow out yourself and learn more as you go along. I feed tons of frozen, Beefheart mix. Bloodworms. Brine shrimp and pellets. I'm 14 too so I am sure anyone else can do it. IMO.

by the time your juvies are adult it would have cost you more than the actually adults. and idk what size your discus are but growin out juvies in a planted tank is not the right thing to do for a beginer
