yeah, longnoses have historically been somewhat finicky eaters in terms of getting them onto prepared foods compared to other gar species (you could probably give a t-gar a piece of wood and he'd chomp it down :)). anyway, for the acrylic feeding stick, just go to an LFS and ask for a (desired length...maybe around 12-18") piece of hard acrylic tubing, and they should be able to cut whatever you want as this stuff is just about always lying around. get a pretty thin diameter piece, and you can always sharpen an end to help it skewer the shrimp properly (or just cram part of the shrimp into the end of the tube). hope that helps!--

i hear where you are comming from w/ the t-gars...they will eat anything! the longnose is still a bit picky. so i think i will try using the feeding stick w/ him. do you offer the food at mid level or more towards the surface?

hey jordan,

i generally offer the food at the surface, once they start regularly taking the shrimp, they will follow it down to mid-level, and on some occasions (of course depending on the individual personality of the fish as well) to the bottom.

they will readily adapt to the food off the stick at the surface, so i would suggest working with that...eventually you can just drop the shrimp in near them and they will catch it at the surface or eventually as it sinks. good luck!--

when i feed all of my other gar i normally drop it in as you said. a few minutes ago i tried feeding the longnose off of a feeding stick w/ no luck. he would swim up and look at it, but wouldn't take it. oh well...i'll keep trying i'm sure he will take shrimp soon.

speeking of t-gars and their eating habits...my g/f and i are currently watching ours try to eat a smelt about 1/3 his body size. :nilly:
of course it was intended for our larger florida gar. like you said they will eat anything.:screwy:

i just tried feeding him shrimp off of the feeding stick again and he took several pieces! thanks for the advice solomon!

Alright, thanks man. Nice to know someone got theirs to eat something besides live...

Good to hear about the frozen food. I must have gotten lucky my spotted gar eats krill since day one. I hear only like 1 in 3 actually will eat anything else other than live.

I keep my gar with cichlids just got 2 big fire mouths and it seems fine

both of my florida/spotteds and my tropical gar were pretty easy to get on frozen/prepared foods. the longnose gar is the on giving me a hard time.

gar in general are very easy to get off of live foods.
