Just wondering where you guys get the really fine white sand I see in alot of cichlid tanks. Brand name? store? anything let me know what your using.

The really fine stuff is called "sugar sized", "oolite" or "oolithic sand" most LFS should have it, if not it's sold by carib sea

"sugar sand" looks amazing but it can be a pain with cichlids as they love to stir it up and it can get sucked by the filter, sometimes damaging the impeller. I use pool filter sand which is still fine enough for them to play but big enough to settle down quickly after it gets disturbed. Never had a problem with it.

this is how it looks

And it's pretty cheap... I think like $6 for a 50 lb. bag

I use pool filter but I was wanting something more fine and white thanks for comments all

I stick with pool filter sand too. I don't like dealing with really fine sand with cichlids that like to dig. The fine sand gets sucked into the filter from very little disturbances. It can be a pain during water changes too IMO.

Found it and bought it thanks all

Hey Mac, sounds like I am a little late. Fine white sand that is cheap and local to us is Home Depot brand Quicrete "media" sand. Brown bag with green labeling. $7.99 for 100 lbs bag.

Do it Mac, if your looking for fine and white, there is no better or cheaper! If you want someone else to put in the dirty work, I will be starting a thread in the setup section (where I spend 50%+ of my time on MFK/moderating) about mixing different brands of sand for different looks at reasonable prices. I can make 150 lbs of the best looking substrate you've seen for less than $20 ;)
