Fire Belly Newt in outdoor pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Why not just set the newt up inside permanently? they do not take up much room and would do fine in a 10 gallon tank their whole life. You could also keep much better control of their climate that way ensuring that the newt does well and won't perish during a heat wave or freeze.

I understand that Spanish ribbed newts (Pleurodeles waltl) also have a broad temperature tolerance. They're much larger than the Notophthalmus and will therefore be more visible in your vegetated pond. Either species will eat fish eggs and fry, so if you're trying to breed your fish, you should probably keep the pond newt-free.

These guys do not ever experience summers over 21 degrees celsius or 70F.... they are pond dwelling newts that don't like currents. Check out caudata.org and caudata culture, I think they did write some articles on Cynops orientalis.

And yea, Spanish ribbed newts grow big and significant enough to be seen, and they are voracious eaters, in relative comparison to the cynops.

Dont forget that regardless of the newt your getting, you will need to cover your woule enclosure with mosquito mesh or other protection, otherwise you will loose your newt the first nigth.
