Anyone know - for certain, how long fire eels live?

I had a rotten experience on another site regarding this issue and only want to hear from anyone who really knows.

I've had my eel since 2002 and I expect it to live, yes, at least 10 to 15 years.

Someone on another site with Einstein brains told me that they could possibly live 10 years and maybe even 15. Ya, since I've it since 2002, I already know that it could live 10 years and then maybe another five. Sorry, some people, don't know if the forum posters are all 10 years old but a lot of sarcasm on these sites and getting quite annoyed with it and when I defend myself, more hate comes my way. One lfs owner told me he left all forum sites he used to give advice to, because too many 10 year olds were obnoxious and giving bad advice and being divisive. Is MFK this way - does anyone know? Anyway...

So, I know I'm sounding off, but have had it with haters on line that can't handle a discussion without attacking, so I guess I'm attacking first.

So, Do any non haters know how long fire eels can live? I've called around - no one knows. I've checked the internet - no one knows. The only responses I ever seem to get is, "Well, I had a spiny eel but it died within a year." Or "congrats on having a fish that long. mine jumped out after 5 months.." Or "I'm sure they can live at least 9 years...." or best one yet, "You should find another home for it - the tank is too small..If I lived closer to you I'd come and rescue it" - that one from someone who killed his off within 6 months....Loving these sites, man. Loads of fun.

I cannot answer your life expectancy question, but I can answer your MFK one.

Yes this site has a few troublemakers, then they get ran off or banned fast.
Real good group of folks around here man.Stick around, browse the archives, you'll love it here.

Can we see your Eel?

Oldest Ive known was 11yrs. but with the proper care they can live longer IMHO. Welcome to MFK, as with all communities there are always a couple of knuckle heads, hence theres always the ignore feature! lol

Got a pic of your eel? Hope you stick around...

Have to agree with Gr8Karma. I don't think there is a true life expectancy on most fish we keep. Life expectancy in the wild will be radically different, and chances are, reduced and you can pick any "natural" reason for that, or anything that effects nature. In the home aquarium, your eel should have every advantage for and extremely long life so long as you give him what he needs. Do your thing right and you'll be the one that will be able to answer this question based on your experience, not what some poser says.

I don't blame him, it can get pretty bad on some forums. They run a fairly tight ship here though, some BS will be tolerated but most all the trolls get banned eventually. So if someone is bothering you just wait, chances are they will get the ban stick eventually. In fact I can think of 3 members (All were kids ironically) who all annoyed me to no end with their mindless posts but now all 3 are banned. :headbang2

No matter what though, there will always be a hater who thinks he/she is an expert and will tell you all about what you are doing wrong when they can't keep a fish more than a month. So just brush them off and keep on doing what you do. I am on tons of forums for different things and I can tell you though that some people who you may not like at first because they seem mean or like a jerk may end up being a help later. It's just hard to judge personalities based on forum posts and someones friendly sarcasm may read to you as insulting. So take it all with a grain of salt and post some pics of your fish. :)

why did that one guy accuse you of keeping the eel in a tank too small? how big is your tank?

Welcome to MFK!

I know this doesnt really answer your question but my friends fire eel is 14 yrs and still strong. He is very strict with his tank though, kinda ocd about it.
