Fire eel only eats shrimp...?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Glad its working out. Yea sounds like she was just eating enough to survive before, if she was so small yet only grew an inch that first year.

Another week in still doing good?

I have a tire track eel in that same size, about 7". I don't want to switch him over to pellets because that seems boring (why get a live food eating fish if you want to feed it pellets?????????). Right now I feed him meal worms and frozen blood worms, he seems to prefer meal worms but will eat either one. I am in the process of setting up a breeder tank for RC Shrimp. When you said you had a plentiful supply, do you breed them? How many did he eat such that he didn't grow much?

I'm a little worried actually, if your's was struggling on RCS, do they not enough nutritional value for eels to thrive??

Glad she's doing well! I would feed her until she's sated every day.. or every other day as long as she's hungry when you feed. I found if i offered food to often they'de get bored.. and would go on hunger strikes ect... you'll figure her out! but i woudl def feed her each feeding as much as she wants.. similar to how catfish eat ime.

for the TT pellets are great if they will take them, you can always use live foods as a treat. My TT use to eat guppies and other small fish along with most invertibrates. bloodwomrs and mealworms ime are not ideal foods for fish, and won't provide the nutrients needed, imo live feeder fish would be more nutritiouse even. But my TT also took really easy to peices of fish cut to his size. If you're "bored" with dead foods, try handfeeding. They respond very well and often become 100X more interactive with their owners once use to it. when young it can be a challenge... but nothing imo is cooler then haveing a 2'+ fish eat from my hands, they can pack a good nip liek a boney tounge but don't have much if anything for teeth. I've had my M dayii literally dange from my finger and never broke skin, just made me need a underwear change.

Hi Yoimbrian, I have literally hundreds of shrimp in my back bedroom haha. I breed them for the local fish store and I keep the low grades for feeders. As for nutrition, I am told they are like crunchy water, not very nutritious, but she loves them still. She would eat about 10 or so each time I fed her (less with the worms now), so I am sure it was just enough for her to stay alive sadly, but she is still alive, and now she is super healthy.

It has been a while since I posted on this thread but everything is going quite well for my eel. She is still loving the worms and still gets her shrimp, and I would say she has grown at least an inch since the new diet. And I totally agree with you on the pellet diet. Why get a predator if you don't get to watch them tear something that is alive to pieces?
