fire eel problem

Does he/she appear to be gasping for air?

When I ran my tank with a single filter my Fire Eel would spend his time near the top of the tank gasping, I added an extra filter making sure the spray bars were breaking the surface of the water and now happily spends his time scouring the bottom of the tank.

In my experience my Eel seems to need higher levels of oxygen in the water than my other fish, maybe you could put an airstone in if your filter return is already breaking/agitating the water's surface.

Well the eel doesn't ever seem to be gasping rather than just lounging and everyone once in a blue moon I'll find her somewhere on the bottom but 90% of the time her behavior is as I said before. I also have a sponge filter and air stone running in my tank the oxygen levels aren't the problem as all the other fish, and tire track, are perfectly fine.

Just wanted to ask how your eel is doing, any change in the behavior that was worrying you?

My guess is your tire track is monopolizing the bottom of your tank. my smaller M Dayi will do this when the big ones gets more aggressive then normal.
