fire eel questions

easy keep and a much tougher fish than you would ever expect. Had mine for years in substandard conditions and had to give him away because I moved. Females are the best ones to have IMO.

Not very hard to sex providing they are around two feet in length. Male usually smaller in both length and girth. Females are simply nice & fat. It becomes way easier to sex them in a community tank full of grown specimens. There is a huge single species tank of them at the Shedd aquarium in Chicago that makes the comparison easy. I saw a male and female in the same cavern together there and the difference in physical appearance was more blatent than one would expect. There were approx. 4 other fire eels in the same tank.
Another good tool for sexing them is that two males will typically fight for prime real estate in the tank and would likely never share the same cavern.
