i got myself 4 fire eel. for 2 months i tried giving them frozen bw, shrimp etc. cus i wish to avoid live. they rather starve.

gave in today bought them live tubifex, they gobble them up in a frenzy :irked:

my fire eel only eats chunks of earthworm. Ive tried chopped shrimp, live maggots and frozen bloodworms. A little over a week ago the eel stopped eating. It still trys to eat the chunks of worm, but always spits them out. The eel doesnt appear to be any thinner, and her color is still good, but im getting worried. My water is healthy, there was a little rotten food under one of the decorations but thats only been there for a couple days and i removed it. I think i made the mistake of overstocking the tank but pretty much all my other fish are surface to mid level dwellers so I dont think thats an issue. I read that adult fire eels are known to stop eating for up to a month at a time but the eel is still pretty young and i would rather see it eat! any suggestions?

Haha I feel you on this one man I got a 12" fire eel REALLY picky dude I don't even know what he eats I kinda throw sinking food by him and I leave hoping that the eel eats it

seems like fire eel really live up to their reputation for being the most fussy eater and best escape artist.

today i found 1 of them in my sump despite me blocking the overflow with a mesh

He is probable eating the food that is left on the bottom of tank, some are real shy and only come out at night when there is not any thing going on and it is nice and quiet and the lights are off. I just got rid of a 14 inch fire eel that I had in my 420,because he never swam around. He was nice and healthy but never colored up,so I traded it for a small bowfin.I have a tire track eel and another fire eel that come out all the time and they love the frozen blood worms, freeze dried krill and pellets ,the tire track eel is really thick about 14 inches.I also have a spotted eel that never comes out,it looks like a big worm compared to the other ones.I keep because its kind of cool looking but came very close to saying bye bye

Mine only ate bloom worms for a few months after I got him, a long with his ghost knife friend. I now feed frozen krill and that has been going well. The ghost knife picks at it and bites off small bits and the fire eel takes the entire krill at a time. I was frustrated because the frozen blood worms were being eaten by ALL of my fish and it's expensive, plus my parents didn't care for the frozen fish food in their fridge. I moved out 3 weeks ago, still moving in my tanks and my 80 gallon with my fire eel , Smaug, is last to move with my 3 parrots. My clown loaches inhale those blood worms like they won't see them tomorrow!

when I feed my fire eel and tire track eel I use a small holding box that you would use to keep fish separate,it has slots on the bottom which are perfect for feeding frozen blood worms,my eels come to the top and pick at the worms, and the other fish can not grab all the worms because I put them in there frozen and they can only get them as they melt. Works much better than the cones that stick to the side of the tank, because when the worms are dead they do not come out of the holes and they don't hold that many worms.a 16 OZ block last me about a week

Mine were all really picky. I used a turkey baster to blow the blood worms in there face took a few days but they caught on. To get them to eat other foods I soaked whatever I was feeding in the blood worms. Now my 20+incher eats anything I put in the tank. I got lucky as mine are out cruising all day.
