I think it will work short term for a year or so but when your jag or other big cichlid grows out and gets mean it will happen quick to in a 265 u may lose the eel.

many spiny eels do like a little salt in there water but its not needed they should do fine as long as they have a good place to hide i've seen large spiny eels kept with large CA/SA cichlids plenty of times you can hand feed them to if there haveing trouble getting food before greedy cichlids like mayans get it
I have had my fire eel in with a roudy bunch of cichlids over the years and he has allways done well. He is in my current set up with some long tubes in the tank for the eel to hide in or just to get away from anything if he had to. I guess it just comes down to the personality of the cichlids. All my guys throw thier weight around, but never really pay much attention to the eel. I have had great luck. All you can do is try it and see what happens.
It should be fine, I had both a 15in fire eel and a 17in tire track eel and a couple of small one in with f0 rd, jag, barred, and a couple others. The cichlids didnt payed any attention to them, probably because they were too busy chasing each other.
as long as they can get to food over the more aggressive tankmates should be no problem, i lost 2 reed fish (rope fish) due to this. as others have said just make sure there is enough cover for them.
