Fire Eel ??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Spiney eels are some of the stupidest/smartest/trickiest/frustrating/clever of all aquarium fish. They will get in to ANYTHING they can. They will jump out of the tank. They will do just about anything that is bad for them... But who could resist their cute little faces?

he has PVC, he has a water bottle in the dark and 2 logs that have great holes for him to get into..... but does he use what is good for him...NO he has to do what he shouldn't  people that have eels say to just sit back and wait ok and then others that have done this find them dead :nilly: what is a new mom to do..... he and I are not reading the same book.... I put the power head back in the overflow hoping that he might find it and go back in there since he loves it so much (not on) now he prob. will not even go there because I want him to

I had a tire track eel that used to get into my HOB filters and I wouldn't see him for weeks at a time . . . didn't bother me because I "knew" he would always show up when he got hungry. Not the case though he managed to get out and I found him dried up behind the tank. Great fish just need to be air tight!

know that he's okay... otherwise leave him alone.. moving the decor around, and otherwise fitzing with things ime encourages them to find better hide spots, which are usually more dangerous. If your spiney is MIA for 3 weeks after a 25% WC there are more issues to addess then skitishness. That is not normal behavior of a spiney thats "happy" with it's tank. If you don't have driftwood in the tank make sure to add some, particularly young ones I've had find them safe havens. By not using the hide spots you've made available your spiney is making it very clear none are acceptable. imo you made a good call putting the powerhead back in.. as long as your husband knows not to plug it in. at least until your fire outgrows the powerhead. Once he settles into a spot, I would go to great pains at working to hand-feed him to get him associating you with food.

You've hit one of many hurdles you can run into with keeping these fish. But they are well worth it, as orange pretty much summed up =D

+1

Just this morning as I woke up I saw only 2 inches of my fire eel coming out of my FX5 output. A few seconds later he shot out the other jet across the tank. I was worried for a second due to me not even being out of bed, but after I woke up I thought it was hilarious. (Only because he didn't have a scratch on him)

yay he is out of the overflow, his name is Memphis.... he came out on his own sat on his tail and waited for me to go to the kitchen get food and feed him :irked: yes I am sure he has put me and the food together...

I put the gutter guard in the overflow while he ate, he will have to find a new perfect spot as the over flow is just not safe, you know power head, filter exhaust and the heater are all back there....

once he found he could not go back there he went around checking out the other spots and found a couple that he liked.... I am going to pick up a safe rock cave from petsmart today see what he thinks of that

My dojo loach does the same thing, but it hides in the substrate, so far he's scared the crap outa me 3 times when sifting my sand to get rid of the dead spots. He hides until I touch him under the sand and FREAKS! Ever see a grown man jump like a girl! lol

I did have a baby sen birchir get sucked into my filters intake and on this loaches tank, I have a piece of pond netting in the overflows opening to detour that same dojo from taking a ride into my sump...Lost the other loach this way when I was using a filter sock...

Up date on Memphis :) I spent an entire day, pruning plants and moving plants and replanting plants (4 different tanks) wow I could not believe how much my plants had over grown

So Memphis tank is full of live plants now, took the pvc and water bottle out... moved the logs around and placed one of those tall root looking things that you can buy at petsmart oh yay and added my huge snail to that tank and took the gutter stuff off because yep you got it he was in the over flow again..... he is going to hurt himself

Yesterday he spent the entire day out investigating everything including the snail he did not go and hide in the over flow all day, and he did not go back in there last night man he is controlling  but I think we finally have it the way he needs it to feel safe.
