If you just got him it may take several days to get used to the tank. What size tank, tankmates and what are you planning on feeding him?

Read threw fire eel related threads and you'll find this is very common with these guys... some take days.. others weeks before they settle in and eat let alone come out. But remember these are generally very shy and reclusive fish in general, particularly when young so the behavior is normal. Make sure he's not getting bullied, they are very docile fish. And make sure your water perameters are perfect and they make a great addition to most tanks.

Be patient. It took mine a couple of weeks to start being comfortable darting out for food and another week to feel comfortable hand feeding and I think a month after that he would always be out swimming never hiding. One of my favorite fish but he jumped ship. Please make sure you cover alllllll holes or spaces at the top of your tank they're great escapers

how much do fire eels go for? been thinking of adding one with my florida gars.. still need to do a bit of research though..

I just moved him from a 30 gallon to a 210 gallon a few days ago and now he's swimming in the early morning but as soon as he or she sees me he digs into the rooks or hides sigh . I don't think he's eating yet ether . His current tank mates are 4 gold fish ( will be removed once the bacteria and stuff are good) , 1 Bala shark ,1 red tail shovel nose catfish mix,1 loch and 2 bristle nose plecos . And there are no holes in the lid . There is a fluvial filter , 2 3 foot wall currents ( bubblers ) , 2 heaters , and a bubbler that go's into a clam that opens and releases bubbles ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1366307024.187415.jpgImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1366307116.090279.jpgImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1366307142.663002.jpg ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1366307280.783470.jpg

a few things to consider... yes sand is best for him... but what worries me more is the hybrid catfish... I have a TSN and a TSNxRTC hybrid myself and would never mix these fish with any of my eels. catfish can fit surprizingly large fish into their mouths... everything you listed will eventually be catfish food includeing the eel.
