I Just got myself a pair of juvi fire eels this past month, and upon doing research it seems that they have been bred in home aquariums? And simply there isn't alot of information about these fish out there. Does anyone have experiance breeding these fish? And the only information i could find about sexing them is that the female is more "robust"? right now my two are in a 40 breeder which they will quickly out-grow i'm well aware of but I'm gonna try and take up the apparent challenge in attempting to breed my two if infact i do have a male and female. Otherwise at what size could i expect to run into aggression issues if i end up with two males, as sexs wheren't determined but I've heard from some say they can get very aggresive towards their own kind at larger sizes, and some say the compleate opposite. and the more aggresive ones seemed to be the "smaller" adults? So makeing the assumptions Males will fight with eachother and likely are seriousely territorial. Where females can be peacefully kept together?

Any thoughts? or suggestions?

And what size tank would other eel owners reccomend for them full-grown? as i plan on purchasing their "final home" in the next 6 monthes or so depending on what I end up with. I was thinking I would split them each into a 125gal if I ended with 2 males, or something around 200 for the pair?

And the 2 are doing great since I got them home, got them eating red worms and now frozen blood worms, they look at me like i'm nutz when I offer them beef heart. But my Senegel's are then happier

very interesting subject...hope someone can fill us in.

I got my two about a year ago- they were a little more than 2" long and are now 8"-9" and 9"-10" long- and the large one has been nipping the smaller one since the first day- never anything serious- but it is very frequent. The bigger one is noticably more robust and has been since it started getting bigger than the littler one- so I assume the larger more robust one is female.
Once in a great while if they have missed a meal they grudgingly eat a tiny piece of market shrimp, but it looks like they do it just to make it to the next worm feeding- any kind- frozen, live, blood, black, earth, and night crawlers that are the same length as they are.
They recognize me personally and are very curious and trusting- the other fish (arowanas dats fei feng polypterus)will back away from my hand in the tank and these guys will come over to see what Im doing.
Sorry nothing to tell you about breeding- I guess I just wanted to brag about my fire eels
I got them at walmart for $2.19 and that was the price for both of them- I guess the cashier thought there was only one in the bag- 50 cents an inch-I thought that was a pretty good deal!
I hope that there was something useful in my rambling for you

Actually it did :headbang2 my two are both in the 9" range atm. I specifically asked for larger ones from my lfs. I had to special order them, seems they are relatively rare around here. I asked around a few of our local shops and nobody had them. So i ordered from my favorite shop :) And he wasn't sure how old they where only that his distributor told him he had them for awhile, a previouse batch he had imported, and they where left over or something. hehe and one should always brag about their pets. So I'm guessing it's safe to assume they can get up to 12" give or take in a year? or theortically, takeing their growth rate and sizes into account. sheesh fast growing lil' buggers.

And one of mine does look beefier then the other but i'm not sure if it's just eating better at the moment.

And it's cool to know they can be kept with Poly's I have 2 senegel's atm and was considering an ornate if I ended up not with a pair, as tank mates.

depending on the responses I get here. even if i don't end up with a pair I may have to get a few more and try and make one.
