Firemouth activity

Firemouths are awesome when kept with other firemouths - they're not the toughest fish from SA/CA.....the appeal is the flaring of the gil's esp. w/ 2 male FM's when they scrap - the more pissed they get the redder they get

IME Firemouths are a pretty skittish species. I had a pair in with a pair of oscars and they always were hiding, even at feeding time. I woke up one morning and saw that my black oscar had a chunk missing out of his side, the firemouths always flared at the oscars but this was the first time there was actual damage. I immediately took the firemouths out and put them in a tank i had that was up and running but empty. Since moving them to their own tank, i expected them to be more personable and such. They hide more now than ever. If I'm even in the room they take off and hide in the plants and decor.

I love these fish, but I think they just don't have the personality that you might be looking for.

Would it be possible to put any tank mates in?

Serpae tetras, tiger barbs? Maybe even smaller african cichlids like demasoni?
I'm thinking not but I have a small hope.

They can, but do it with caution. Depends on how big the tank is. I would say no to demasoni since they need to be in groups I think, and they are a bit aggressive too. The jewel is a pushy fish, and doesnt back down either to bigger fish.

If the tank size is right, you can try a tankmate, but something to match its aggression, or maybe something that is able to keep away from it. Barbs and tetras can be added with caution. They are fast and will stay away, but its quite possible one or some will be eaten/killed if the Jewel manages to catch it.
