But in all seriousness, how do you clean sand? Just scoop the ilk off of the top?

The sand I use is heavy enough that I can clean it like gravel.

You want to get a heavier inert type of Aquarium sand that most good LFS should stock. That way it won't effect the pH of the tank.

I've found that my FMs quite like coral sand as it keeps the pH around 7.5 which they quite like.
