Hi All,
So I have been stocking my 125gal tank with various SA/CA Cichlids:

A few different Acaras, Severum, Threadfin, Sajica, Rainbow and a Firemouth

The Firemouth is chasing a few of the other fish, particularly the ones added at a later stage.
Will this sort of behaviour calm down?
Or will I need to remove it?
And if I do, will the next fish just move up the pecking order and continue with the aggression?

Thanks

Is there any damage to the other fish? Is your firemouth larger then the others?
It might settle down but it might not. I had raised a male firemouth w/ a female salvini in a 55g, and the firemouth ended up killing the larger salvini.
The only thing that might help is adding some more hiding spots. If the FM is damaging the other fish I would remove him.

cichlidfish,

No, there is no damage to the other fish.
The Firemouth is more or less the same size.

Mainly the sajica that it is going after, but some of the others too. There are plenty of hiding spots - loads of pieces of wood in the tank.
No sooner does the sajica get chased, then it swims back to the same spot, near the Firemouth, it gets chased again, and the whole process gets repeated again....and again.

Right, so this finally annoyed me and I took the Firemouth out.

It's currently in my QT tank.

Is there any point in waiting a day or two and trying to re-introduce it?
Or should I take it back the the lfs??

I had a fire mouth and he was a little mean and then all the sudden fought with everyone to the death of him self.

It might work.... Let the other fish develop and establish themselves in that bigger tank, make up their territories etc then consider re-introducing the Firemouth...

Male Firemouths can be very pushy and if they're not damaging your other fish they sure as Hell can cause a lot of stress resulting in infections.

Adding a new fish to an already established pecking order tank can be a bit frustrating.

Try moving the decorations around and introduce the new fish it can help cause them all to feel a new environment and not focus on this is my spot move your fin trick before I show who the king is..

After the new fish is introduced in the new tank design, Do NOT feed them right away. Feeding can be a lets get it on activity sometimes.

So the FM is removed now, you can try the above method of decor change or wait for new pecking order to establish. I have noticed in my tanks when the King of Hill falls, shortly after the replacement is right behind to take his spot.

Good news, no external damage was taking place.

Good Luck, Hope all works out well for you..

My male firemouth was peaceful with my other rainbows from a size of 2" to 4" ( the rainbows were 4" the whole time) then all of a sudden it went completely crazy on them. After a while, the rainbows backed down and fled when he would size them up. Now they'll know when he's going to attack and hide. If your other fish accept the firemouth being the "Alpha Male", it will work. I would say try it out, but put a LOT of hiding places in there, and monitor your fish very closely. Good luck.
