Here's a video of a pair of my T. meeki 'Rio Subin' F1s guarding their spawn. Check out the male and female for differences. The male (for equivalently aged fish) is larger, somewhat more colorful (although not always with this species), and is "chunkier" Also, his dorsal and anal fins are larger in proportion to the size of the fish, and more streaming (pointed and longer). Venting is fine if the fish is mature but the "old school idea" of purchasing 6-8 young and raising them up together until they pair is, IME the way to go.
