Firemouth Breeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For the billionth time: you can't sex firemouth by looking at pictures. Venting is the o n l y reliable method. This should be made a sticky along with "salt is not the cure for every existing freshwater fish disease".

Thanks for your magnificent assistance. At least we know who to turn to if we ever need advice.

Sorry that you got offended, but your walmart-sexing methods haven't been used since 1970 lol

If you do a little research you won't have to get this mad next time :)

Im not offended. I just totally disagree that the only way of sexing FMs is through vwnting. I also disagree with the way you said it.

There should maybe be a sticky for cacichlids knows everything.

Here's a video of a pair of my T. meeki 'Rio Subin' F1s guarding their spawn. Check out the male and female for differences. The male (for equivalently aged fish) is larger, somewhat more colorful (although not always with this species), and is "chunkier" Also, his dorsal and anal fins are larger in proportion to the size of the fish, and more streaming (pointed and longer). Venting is fine if the fish is mature but the "old school idea" of purchasing 6-8 young and raising them up together until they pair is, IME the way to go.

Beautiful lookin fish, what size are those?

First off.... Venting a Firemouth IS NOT the ONLY way of sexing them. It obviously helps but is not the easiest thing to look at.

Males tend to be larger with longer bodies and bigger heads and bigger mouths... The fins tend to be longer and more pronounced and the colors more intense.

Females tend to be rounder with shorter fins but can still have long extentions...

Heres two obvious signs
