FIREMOUTH Cichlid (Two Subspecies or the same)

Cant take you guys seriously when your suggesting theres a new subspecies of firemouth out there with a concave forehead:) maybe you should be the people classifying fish and get us a new thoricthys for the hobby. Although its probably not smart to use the genetic mutts 20 generations from the wild to determine the new species. Keep up the good work guys You are the next level of genus in the hobby

Hi Guys,

I don't usually drop into these kind of threads much as they rarely make much sense and I've got a morning to kill! :P There are regional variations of T. meeki in many waterways of Mexico and CA, but sadly you can't really compare domestic strains of fish unless you 100% know the province, nice idea however. :)

If your interested in a subspecies, then look into Thorichthys affinis, these are more or less a meeki from 'Lago de Peten', but with a light orange throat and belly region. I wouldn't be surprised at some point that T. meeki could end up becoming a junior synonym like V.synspila has with V.melanura. Then according to the ICZN ruling T. meeki would have to become T. affinis as the latter was described first.

Now that would be food for thought!! ;)

All the best,

Lee.

I've noticed about you that you seem to think you can butt into topics that shouldn't really interest you just to start arguments and because you're mates with a Mod you think you can ride roughshot and get away with being rude and disrespectful of fellow members on here... Is there an ignore option on here - I'm getting fed up of this character!

Thanks...

Watch this space as I'm starting a project now with breeding Firemouths with extended red coloration.... I've Got two gorgeous breeding pairs, of which one has spawned already... they have redder than normal bodies whereas the other paire have redder than normal faces... The plan is to selectively breed them to get the most red coverage, a bit like the Pyro Trimacs, where they have more brilliant colors or the Electric Blue Dempseys.

We'll have to think of a name for them like "Super Firemouths" or "Super Red Firemouths"
