i got 2 firemouth cichlids from a friend and was wondering how fast they grow they are just starting to get alittle color and they are not even 2 in yet when will they be fuly colored ? could i put them in with my convicts or should they go in with something that isnt so aggressive ? thanks

I have 6 in a tank with a female Con. Nobody bothers anybody. They're all around 2.5" and are starting to color up.
If you can find a high quality firemouth I think they're a very colorful, beautiful fish. Bright read on the underside and spangling throughout a flowing, trailing dorsal fin very much appeals to me.
To answer your question though, I've had some at 2" that have been just as colorful as any adult I've ever seen.

My biggest was really colorful(very deep/intense red) & thick, I got him @ around 5"-6" so I'm assuming his was older.
The others I've had showed a lot of pearling, greens, blues,etc.
Some even showed some nice yellow base throughout the body.
My FM were much more colorful than most of my cons.
Even my smallest FMs had great colors.
It's great to see them facing off, when they flare up you see the true colors.

I have three I purchased last week. They are between 1" and 2" and all show great color already. Its so fun to watch them posture towards eachother. It never gets old seeing them "beard up" haha.
I've seen one amazing strain but I forget where from. The old hobby strains tend to be a bit drab in my opinion though.
