Firemouth Cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't mind getting another firemouth but they are to young to know if they are male or female. I believe I have a pair but I'm not 100% yet.

I wouldn't add just one more. They are less likely to be aggressive towards each other if you get a few. It's best to get a group of youngsters and let them grow up together. if you end up with to many males, you can take a couple back to the store.
I have a tank roughly the size of yours with 11 thorichthys helleri(from the same family as firemouths just in case you don't know)
I have 3 males in there and the rest are females.
The tank has been set up for nearly two years and I have no problem with aggressive behaviour.
I also have a group of swordtails for the upper levels of the tank.
You could do the same with firemouths in your tank.

How many firemouths do you think would be good in a 55 gallon? I have 2 firemouths and 6 mollies right now?

You could keep around 10.
The females won't reach the same size as adult males and will stay considerably smaller.Ideally three males severn females would be a good ratio.
Your livebeares will be fine in there with them.
Just do large weekly water changes and keep the tank well furnished with rocks and roots, a sand substrate is also recommended for thorichthys.
Here is my tank. It's a simular size to yours and has 11 thorichthys and a group of swordtails.
Just to give you an idea of how it can work out.
