The Land of Pleasant Living.
Just got my tripod set up, didn't have a lot of time but got a few decent shots, let me know what you think, or if you have any tips to make the pictures any better!

I don't know what to tell you to make them better but I'm sure a slr can do much better than that. What camera?

From what I've read over at aquatic photography, is you need as much light as you can get over your tank.

NO (normal output) fluorescent lights probably wont cut it, use CF/t5 etc..

Once you have a lot of light over the tank, your pics will come out crystal clear and you'll be winning POTM in no time lol

I'm shooting a Nikon d80.

I can almost guarantee lighting is the issue. Looks like just a 20w fluorescent bulb. The setup was given to me by my father, and the light is the same light he got probably 20 some years ago. What kind of light do you suggest? and do you know of anywhere to get one at a great price?

The pros such as chaitika and CDM use remote flash setups made by nikon, I forget the name, but they are several hundred dollars each.

That's one way.

Another way is to use either high out put t5's (t5HO) or compact flourescents (CF) lights.

Browse craigslist, mfk classifieds etc... they come up once in a while.

I've been wanting a nice camera, but $$$. Just play around with the settings and I'm sure you'll find that perfect shot.;)

Yeah, I invested in the camera to take with me when I went to Alaska to do my graduate research, Definitely worth the price. I got some amazing shots up there, but I'm new to smaller scale photography. I did see about the remote flash set up, but I'd rather save that money to put toward the tanks themselves, it looks like some upgraded lighting is the way to go. I'm off to petsmart once I get out of this class!

You can find older flashes on craigslist for great prices. Nikon sb-28's will run about 100 bucks. Those were the pro flashes a couple of years ago for the D1X. They are compatible with your D80.
