I decided to stick with my firemouth and wanted to get a idea what would be the best tankmates in a 55 gallon open to all options. Thanks in advance for the advice!

Honduran red point, convict, several geo species for the bill, a true green terror may work( Stalsbergi) there are a lot of option so maybe if you narrow it down to what you are looking for we can help better.

Granted all smaller CA/SA's would work.
Most fish from the Cryptoheros genera, Archocentrus and such. Smaller Geo's and Gymno's.

I on the other hand would not recommend Stalsbergi. I find their aggression to be equal to if not more so than that of an Amphilophus species. They would likely shred the FM in a matter of minutes. Plus, males are capable of reaching 10" so I'd put them as too large for a 55.

I have never heard of a 10" stalsbergi and understood that they max at 8" and yes some specimens may be too aggressive but that can occur in ANY species it all comes down to the fish.

Salvini, Jack Dempsey, Ellioti, Rainbow cichlids, just to name a few.

There is a thread on here with a 10"er. It will certainly take a long time to reach any size over 8"+ granted. But they grow fairly quickly. As for aggression it does come down to the individual, as is with any cichlid. But I personally wouldn't mix them with a FM, least of all in a 55.

what worked with me was a dempsey and 2 cons with my 2 firemouths when i had them
