I agree that darker gravel helps but its not really needed. My firemouth is 3 1/2inches long in a 30g with white gravel and black background, he stays consistantley "firemouth grey". When I first put him in the tank he was pale, practically see through. After about a month or so he colored up and now he look like a normal fire mouth. Just get whatever color gravel you want and give them some time.
