lovly fish hope you get the albino like you want

yeah nice fish mr firemouth would you mind filling some of us in on the secrets to such vivid colors

Line breeding is the secret to colorful cichlids. We do it all the time with angels and discus. However, no one ever really does it with other cichlids because of the huge investment in time to get the end results.
The adult fish in the pics are 4th gen and took roughly 5 years to produce.
The 6th gen fry I have right now have several very colorful individuals in their pack. I am going to grow them out a little more before I try taking pics.

Also, Large 90% weekly water changes and lots of Activated Carbon with heavy feedings of a varied diet.

I'll have to talk to Jeff more about the albino's.
The mixtecos are very firemouth-like, and the albinos have red eyes (at least mine did). My firemouth and mixteco (smaller) got along pretty well. Jeff said that the albinos will breed true.

I Talked to Jeff and he said he had no sources for albino T.Meeki. This leaves me on a quest of trying to continue to mutate the gene on my own until someone else can help me. Albinoism is a genetic mutation that happens very rarely in nature. I am only breeding 2-3 pairs at a time so this may take another 7 years.

While an albino firemouth would be interesting, and represents a challenge, why have an albino firemouth that (probably) looks like an albino mixteco? Or are you hoping for albino but retaining the red belly? I much prefer the look of a dark firemouth; bluish with bright red belly. That's something you can't always find, and that you have already bred successfully. No intended criticism, just a question.

Criticism is welcome, makes me rethink things. The goal is a red bellied firemouth. take this pic...

Now remove all the blue and replace it with white. The dark bands would be a faint yellow, the eyes would be red, and all the red coloration in the fins and body would remain. This would be a gorgeous, never seen, show stopping fish! This is the true goal!
