The matter through which it must pass to get from one to the other
The amount of time the origin and target are touching
The amount of pressure applied
There's plenty more, I'm sure. But if you start tweaking these variables, it's not tough to create a scenario where a target surface won't be damaged by the heat from the origin. The easiest to adjust is time. And walking happens pretty darn quickly. Unlike roasting a chicken.
