Firewood catfish doing barrel rolls

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
don't put him in another tank sorry for the mistake. regular water changes and adding salt may help and most of all increase the aeration and oxyegen

I agree, I don't usually recomend salt with catfish except in extream cases. The salt wil help negate the effects of the nitrate posining. Use 1 tablespoon per 10 gallons max of aquarium water. Increased airation will help too I hope he makesit/made it.

I was considering moving him to my 120 corner tank if I needed to medicate at all but I'm having a string of bad luck in my fishkeeping life. The 120 started leaking from a separated bottom seam yesterday. Catfish is still alive, maybe slightly better than last night. He was trying to swim when I first checked on him, or maybe just trying to get off his back, but at least moving. After a few minutes he ended up on his side resting on the bottom again. Last night I added a couple air stones and raised my pump output even higher in hopes that it may be some help. Nitrates are at about 15-20. I'll start the salt shortly. Tested ammonia and nitrites again, still zero on both. All others in the tank still acting normal

poor guy tank looks a bit cloudy do many water changes. dont add chlorine and make sure you dont clean the filter catrideges since they contain beneficial bacteria that will kill the ammonia and nitrates

looks like he is suffering from an ammonia burn use a extremely strong filter in the tank put some old filter media in the filter so it can start cycling the tank do not feed your fish until ammonia is down cats can go on a day or 2 without food adding food will make the condition much worse
raise the temp of the tank you should fine

Salt has been in over a day. About half the time when I check on him he's on his side, otherwise he is just leaning a little. All others still acting normal. On my way home with purigen shortly.

do not feed fishes at all, install a stronger filter with old filter media from your other old filters keep your tank clean as possible. try putting in some multiple filters like the sponge filter which is great for colonising bacteria if you put in 2 large sponge filter it should help

Just in case I wasn't clear, my backup tank sprung a leak. The cats are still in the 400+ plywood tank. Filtration is a DIY sump with 15 gallons of static bio and a fluidized sand filter of about 20lbs which was able to convert all the waste efficiently enough to never show ammonia or nitrites even when I was overfeeding. The cloudiness is an illusion created by looking through a lighted area into a dark area in the tank, dusty glass, and a crappy cell phone camera. When I shine a light in I can still see every bit of wood grain on the back through four feet of water.

No change so far. Cat is still sometimes lying normally and sometimes on his side. Added almost a liter of purigen in a seachem "the bag." Nitrates were still hanging around 15 earlier today.
