First 125 gallon tank, Need some help please.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've had my midevil in a 75 for a couple years now and I don't like it. I can't wait to put him in a 125. You'd think a 48x18 tank is enough but in time you realize how small it is.

However, in your situation, I probably go with two 75 gallon tanks than one 125 because at least in the two 75 gallon tank no one has the opportunity to kill anyone.

I agree, although I've seen many manyyy healthy Amphs in 75g tanks. I don't think it's large enough for a mature adult. My F1 Midas is about 8" and absolutely loves swimming from end to end of his 125 (at least before I put up a divider and found him a female). If a full grown Amph is in a 55/75/90g, he still only has 4' in length to swim. They can easily grow over 12" in length, so their room to travel is only four times their size. Think about a dog - I had a Siberian Husky in my old house on just over an acre of land. He absolutely loved being able to run around the house and along the property/tree line. After I moved to my small apt with a back yard no larger than my apt, I felt as though it would have been cruel to keep him knowing he wouldn't have much room to "play". He technically would have had enough space to move around comfortably, but wouldn't have been nearly as happy as he was on a larger piece of land that didn't restrict him
-I hope that analogy made sense lol

I think based on my situation I'll go with the 2 75 gal for now. My family and I love the JD and would hate to get rid of it.

The analogy did make sense, in this situation though it would get a bigger tank all to himself. I think that'll work for now. I agree more space is ideal.

Also, I'm not sure about the etiquette with creating threads as I have so many questions and don't want to spam the forum with new topics. Should I start a new thread about the 75 gal and JD tank mate suggestions or should I keep going on this thread?

I'd keep going with this thread for now.

In the past I have kept JDs with Convicts, Festae and Rivulatus at different times. They were much smaller and I had to rehome them before I needed a larger tank. I'm basically starting over from scratch as I had to sell everything off before.

with a single male JD and a 75g tank, you've got a number of different possibilities. What kind of scape are you planning on doing? Con's would work well, the Thorichthys genus would compliment the JD, Severums, a group of smaller EBJDS, smaller species from the Andinoacara genus, maybe a school of Silver Dollars or catfish as bottom dwellers? Like I said, a number of possibilities lol
Just keep in mind that you're going to want more than one or two fish to go in with him. If you go with just one the JD will more than likely begin picking on it and if you choose to add only two fish, the two most dominant will pick on the least dominant. Be sure to keep that in mind when selecting your stock

I believe the JD is a female but is yet to show a lot of color to tell and the fins are looking for female. I was possibly thinking of blue acara and coinvicts. As for bottom dwellers I'm partial to corydoras, but never kept them when the cichlids got bigger in fear of the possible aggression. A lot of people like silver dollars with cichlids, but I always found them boring. I don't know why really. I've never kept them, just from what I've seen in lfs.

I just looked them up and agree they're gorgeous fish. I've mixed Old World and New World cichlids in the past, but prefer not to do it if I can help it. It is an option though.
