First attempt at aquascaping

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice start!

Some observations I had, which hopefully you won't mind me mentioning...

1) I see that you've banked up/sloped substrate in the corners, if you wish to maintain these slopes and avoid it flattening over time; it could be prudent to invest in substrate supports, which basically are little slots of plastic.
2) If you don't have one, a drop checker is a great idea (and cheap) to monitor your co2 levels, aiming for a green colour to indicate ph around 7 and below; (avoid yellow)
3) I'd remove the plant at the back corners, it's not elodea; can't remember its exact name, but in the past i've found it to break up easily over time, clogging everything and ruining tank aesthetics.
4) Did you establish the tank bacteria by cycling?
5) What type of lighting do you have? :)

Ah ****, alright. Here's hoping it does. Otherwise I'd probably like to find some smaller grass like plants to carpet with. Are there any that fit that bill? Kind of like lawn grass? (but you know... small)
Liliopsis (I'm not sure if that's spelt properly) pretty much looks like lawn grass, and grew (not real great, but it grew) in my bettas tank, which had nothing special with regards to lighting, co2 etc. :)

Dont let me put you off, coz i heard the same thing when i started with it and it grew like wildfire...

Its just that i tore the tank down and didnt want the maintanence of dwarf baby tears or i would go for it again...

Aight, well I'm hoping those tears grow. They look awesome.

I'm not removing the plants from the back, I think they look nice and they are growing like crazy. I only "cycled" the tank for a week before adding fish. But I had also added a filter that was used with the previous tank that has beneficial bacteria. So I figured that might be a shortcut/cheat in any case all the fish are still alive but the blue one is being an ******* and getting at the moss. Not his fault, just gotta feed him. Gonna go get a bubble counter though. Also the lighting is one strip of some LED's with some blue lights and one regular fluorescent bulb. I think the LEDs are the correct type of light, not sure about the fluorescent though.

Add some large dragon stone or seiryu rocks that have character. The large tank is drowning out the wood. Adding the rocks will fill in the tank and will look amazing as the tears carpet around it and moss starts to make it look like it has been there for ages.

The piece of wood in the center looks out of place. Maybe put it together with the one on the right?

Great tank! Thanks for sharing your pics, hoping to do my own smaller aquascape tank soon :D
