After making an egg tumbler, I stripped one of my females that had been holding about 8 days. It was slightly better than disastrous. I managed to get 8 egg/fry into the tumbler.

They have eyes and a tail and a egg sack, they have been in the tumbler 12 hours now and wanted to now how long it takes for any nonviable ones to appear so i can remove them. Are they easy to tell which ones are died, is it something that happens quickly and i need to check often?

thanks,

That depends. If they all have eyes and tails then they are all viable. They will turn milky looking and will float when dead.

the egg tumbler cost me 5 bucks to make the pump was 5 (on sale) 3 for the check valve and air stone.
when to strip is a tough one, type of fish, tank temp and other factors need to be looked at and do what you feel is best.
I stripped at 7 days the fry became free swimming 7 days later.
next time I will be waiting. a few more days.

Depending on the fish, usually around the 14th day is good. If you can hold off until like the 18th day most of the egg sack will be gone and they will be ready to eat at about 21 days. Again, depending on the type of fish you have. Some females hold longer, some hold shorter.

I stripped after 18 days for my first one, and was going to strip my second female on the 18th day but she released hours before into the main tank. I've found 4 of the fry hiding in the rockwork as I've cleaned but her tankmates ate most of them.

I personally have never needed a tumbler though since I've just moved and stripped as needed.
