Tempered glass can shatter int billions of pieces if struck just he right way, plate glass just cracks/breaks. Go with plate glass.
There are arguements for and against pane and tempered glass. I'm not sure either is better than the other. Tempered glass shatters into slivers, instant catastrophic failure.. But it takes just the right hit in just the wrong spot to break it. non tempered glass can crack without breaking, allowing you to get your fish out and get buckets/etc.. But breaks slightly easier. (though it still takes a good bit to break)

I tried this and it didnt work very well. I had the most luck putting the brushes in the fridge overnight. Again, mineral spirits does a decent job cleaning them but throwing them away is still the best option.
