I hope your fish live long and happy!

i cant help it if my pump decided to give up on me, surely i am doing the right thing by asking for advice!!!

how much is the air pump that you get for air stones?

where abouts would i run the air line to keep it looking tidy? i assume under my substrate and then up the corner of the tank, but how would i keep it neatly packed in the corner?

anyone?

I find it really hard to believe that fish that small could run out of oxygen with a spray bar agitating the surface.
But if you want to hook up the airstone it couldn't hurt. Get a Whisper, they're about $20. It seems like a lot right now but you'll use it again and again and again if you stay in the hobby. Air pumps have 1001 uses.

To me its more likely that the fish are gasping because of nitrite or ammonia poisoning, since the tank is uncycled. These chemicals burn the gills and can make it appear like they are gasping for air. No way around this except to do a couple water changes, and remember fishless cycling for next time.
Also, did you dechlorinate your water? Because that can burn the gills too.

i have declorinated the water, yes.

what sort of water change do you recommend?

First of all, do you have any water testing kits? Because if you have an ammonia or nitrite test you could just do that right now and we could be sure of the problem.
If not, do a quick 25% water change and see if anything imnproves. But don't touch the gravel or the filter or anything for now, just drain water only. And if you have a good dechlorinator like Seachem Prime you can add that directly to the tank now, as it also helps to bring down ammonia and things like that.
