If it's eating live. Wait a few weeks for it to get used to ur tank than stop feeding live foods. Starve it for a lil while until it takes talipia or other frozen foods. I had to starve mine for 2 weeks until it stated taken frozen but he has grown much faster and seams more active now that he has....and hand feeding gars is just cool
 
no, starving is not the proper method.
 
How are u supposed to do it than? I could never get mine to take anything but live foods only time he ever even looked at frozen food was when I didn't give him live. Tried strips of talipia everyday for 2 weeks till he took it. Now he eats it everyday. So what is the best way to do it?
 
there are quite a few methods listed here on the forums. a simple search would do
 
just don't force feed like one member did....:D

i usually throw food in frmo just 1 corner of the tank so they come to realise that food drops in from there.
 
Well done on the getting the gar.

Regarding the feeding, i have come across a more stubbin fish, i have a gar that is worse fish i ever had when it come to him eatting any else apart from live fish. Apart from the food thing it is by far one of the greatest fish i have in my collection. Also in South Africa its is one of the rearest fish and i have one :-). I have never seen or hear of any one ere that has a gar.
