I did some research and I dont think I want to add a bichir to my monster tank because I want to add a Wolf fish instead.

Will a undergravel filter like this one

disrupt a wolf fish or a sting ray?

I am making this for my wife. It is going to be a 150g monster gold fish set up. I promised to set up this tank with the fish she wanted to pick out. This is how I talked her into letting me get a monster tank, getting her involved.

This undergravel filter was the clever work of CHOMPERS. Here is the post that inspired me http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69943 I just have to add 2 crosses, drill the holes and run the return pipe and it should be finished.. His post inspired me to make one for my 150 and my 210g.

Good idea getting the wife involved. That's why I am settign up a 90g for the wife to have Africans. I am no expert but if you start with a wolf fish, you may end up with only that fish left in the tank. Not a community fish by any regard from what I have read.

So you are going the gravel route with a UGF instead of sand? If you are going to do a ray, most people do sand for substrate. Not trying to poke holes in your plan, just asking questions to help. If you have not built your UGF yet, go sand, you won't regret it!

I have pondered the sand idea. I just need an inch from what I remember reading... where can I buy sand for inexpensive? and how do I wash it? silly question but I really dont know.

If your just starting out these questions are totally normal. No worries. I like about 2" of sand in my tank but I also move it around allot to avoid dead zones. Go to your local pool/SPA supply store and get pool filter sand. Totally fish safe and looks great and is dirt cheap. About $9 per 50 lbs.

Put it in a 5 gallon bucket half full of water and put about 4" in at a time. Turn your hose on full blast and dump as much of the water out as possible. Repeat this until the water get rystal clear, expect to repeat at least five times. Buy more than you need so you can waste a bunch and not worry, This will only help you get it cleaner and avoid the "cloudy water" when you done. You'll get a little clouding but only for a couple hours, not days...

Just wondering what you mean by wolf fish, i know wolf cichlid normally means a dovi, but most of the time i see people saying wolf fish they are talking about snakehead that aren't legal here.

Wolf fish=hoplias malabaricus which are completely legal in almost every state other than california. Go do some research on the hoplias family and type in aimara.
