Along with rain and cold temperatures, fall in Oregon brings mushrooms. Today we found Chanterelles and Chicken-of-the-Woods (which stayed in the woods, I'm not that fond of them). Later on the Hedgehogs will be showing up, my personal favorite.

Anybody else hunt wild mushrooms? What is popping up in your neck of the woods?

On a side note, please do not discuss psychoactive mushrooms in this thread, or any other thread on MFK - it is against the TOS.

Morels are found mostly in the Spring around here. They are my wife's favorite - sliced up, soaked in saltwater for 10 minutes, dipped them in egg then bread crumbs and deep-fried...

I can only guess what these are.

We don't get many Mushrooms here

Texas is just a tad warm and dry for mushrooms, I would imagine...

Here are a few more mushroom hunting photos from years past:

Here's an ignorant question: How can you tell poisonous ones from non poisonous ones?

To put it in fish terms, it's like distinguishing Geophagus abalios from G. altifrons or G. surinamensis. You have to know exactly the species of mushroom you are looking for, anything else (there are lots and lots) is assumed to be inedible. Some are easy to ID as there is nothing similar, but others can be easily confused and need to checked carefully for identifying characteristics.
