First puffer (fahaka).

That's how big our Zelda, who now goes by Piffy, was, too! Now he is fat and close to 4". I actually miss tiny Piffy! You will be so rewarded by the small size. Don't get discouraged. PP is right, some Melafix should help a lot. Feed good quality food and make sure the grow out is somewhere that gets a lot of traffic. Congrats!

the tail will heal up with good nutrition and frequent water changes. He was more than likely in a tank with other small fahakas and that damage was done by another. Be prepared for a cool wet pet, I love my big girl :)

When I got my fahaka its tail was chomped up as well, but healed very quickly.
If you're using melafix IME I would suggest only half the dosage (although some may not agree) as they're scaleless fish and make sure you've got a good air pump running.

Thanks for the responses. He seems to be doing ok. He likes frozen shrimp and I have seen him eat one ghost shrimp and seems like he ate others.

For the melafix do you treat the water or food like with prazipro?

There is a good amount of air through a box filter with gravel from my other tank to cycle the rest of the filter and a HOB filter there is enough water movement that he has to work against the current in a few places but has a container of sand that he sleeps on. There is also a decoration turned on its side for a cave.

How long can he stay in the 10g? I want to put him in the 150g but it seams like he would get lost in there. It takes a while to find him in the 10g sometimes.

Treat the water with Melafix. I never dose less than recommended on the bottle (1 drop/gal works well for measuring). As soon as he's healthy, move him to his permanent home.

If you've got enough aeration from the HOB filter that's good.

Your little guy is fine in the 10G for now as he is less than an inch in size, but expect an inch to an inch and a half growth rate per month in the first year. I'd personally transfer him over to the 150G around the 3" mark if you don't have a transitional tank to put him in. Considering the 10G's water volume you could/should move it even sooner if you don't like doing water changes more than once a week. Sure he may get a little lost in there first but he will certainly learn to appreciate the bigger tank sooner than later.

Personally, i placed mine at 1.5" straight into my 200G... Didnt want to run any risk of accidentally stunting mu puffers growth...
