they grow pretty fast. i had one that was 1" grew it to about 20" in maybe 10 months?

Not my opinion, Milkmann...I find they do not grow quickly. That is why a 12 incher is worth every penny for me...

The guy in the lfs said they grow like 4" a year (or was that just a lie) its in with a shoal of larger clown laches, a few polys, fire eel, pleco, a few synodontis.

Synodontis are small, right? The rck and other fish did not eat them?
