In regards to salt instant ocean is good for non-reef if you wan a reef(which I bet one day you will) I would be Salinity it is the top of line salt and doesn't raise alkality to high. IMO it's better to invest in reef stuff at the start and have a great colorful tank with more activity than a pair of clowns and a few hermit crabs

I really just want the clown fish...reef is cool but at this point I don't think I want to go that route

A skimmer will make things a lot easier to keep stable. A sealed top is a must on somthing that size. Start with 20 lbs of base rock and live rock to seed it with on top. Once it cycles pick up a few 5dollar frags and enjoy the ride.

Trust me... You will have some sort of desire for a reef :) I set up my tank thinking I was going to get a lionfish... Ended up going reef after I discovered more affordable lighting options. Keep in mind that there might be a remote possibility of reef someday when you are setting it up.

Be sure if you ever want reef lights to PM me, I can find you a cheap, powerful, durable, LED light fixture for you. I got reef LEDs on my 75 gallon (48") for only $250! Most other 48" lights would be $150 more than that.

I appreciate that...but my tank is a tall and biggest strip that will fit is 20 inches and I get my stripes for 25 bucks each...and about the rock??? 20 lbs that seems like a lot then how big of a seed??? Also 20 lbs or Argonite sand is there going to be room for water? And the tank already has a solid lid...

Fish only aka F/O tank doesn't require LR or aragonite so long as you can keep PH and salinity stable with nitrates 20ppm or less however you will need something for the B+B to live on and in. One single clown isn't gonna make that much of a mess however with no rocks it'll probably host a top corner in the tank rarely leaving it making the tank relatively boring- this can happen with clowns even if there's a ton of rocks esp. black ones. Smaller species of clowns aren't exactly known for an open water presence.

If someday you do change to a reef the other info given will help a lot.

Yea Well I am still kinda just looking into it at the moment...I haven't found anywhere that sells base rock or live rock yet but going to talk to a guy today that's very knowledgeable perhaps he has the stuff and can direct me to it...
