Ive been writting this a lot recently...but I feel that skimmers are the most important part of a reef tank other than the lights. I run a 75g reef, and other than bi weekly water changes, I have no filtration other than my skimmer. All my nitrogenous wastes and ammonia come out at zero. I think thats enough said.

thats interesting...

how do you take care of macro filtration? ie. filter pads

:iagree::iagree::iagree: the only reason i run any kind of filtration besides live rock and sand and a skimmer is because i am so heavily stocked with messy eaters in my pred tank but in my reef all i have is a sump full of bio balls protein skimmer uv sterilizer no need for mech. filtration my inverts and sifters keep everything cleaned up.

Dont need it. I dont have large chunks of anything floating in my tank. If I saw some...I would remove it.

I feed this system heavily. Every other day with coral frenzy, sometimes marine snow, large meaty things for lps corals, and algae, mysis, newlife spectrum for the fish, and they can graze on a couple patches of calurpa that I keep in my tank. Everything is overfed, and still, no detectable wastes in the water.

Believe it or not, I ran the same system on a predatory reef. I had a spotted grouper and a volitan lion. Its all about having an aged system...stocking slowly, paying attention to water quality...ect.
