This is somewhat true, I don't disagree that live rock is a good biofilter, but sand is better period. The misconseption that live rock is the most important biofiltration was created by the people who sell live rock so they can sell more.

You would be surprized how effective a DSB can be, you don't need hundreds gallons of water flowing through your bio every second for it to work. The Nitrogen compounds disperce through the water, and therefore when there is a lower concentration in the sand due to consumption the Nitrogen flows to the area of low concentration, thats just basic chemisty/biology, high flows to low untill equal.

Infact with a proper DSB running a fork through can nuke your system as it will cause a huge dieout in the micro inverts that live in your sand, but when not disturbed will never cause a problem. The idea is to have a diverce ecosystem contained in the sand, full of pods, micro stars, worms, bacteria, snales, etc when up to a proper population these critters will maintain you DSB perfectly. Their population/movement will stir the sand so much more then you could ever hope to do (yes they are small but there is millions of them and they move allll day), allowing propper flow of nutrients in and out of the sand, wile preventing the "nuke".

arguing with this guy is like asking to get slapped over the internet:ROFL:

Sand is better than liverock. Thats why 20k tanks are ran by SAND filters.

Perfect example is shark tanks... there is almost NO live rock. Sometimes no sand, but i bet there is thousands of lbs of sand in the filters.

Kevin you keep spacing off for a number of weeks ... where do you go?

:D I've just been busy, so i often only post when no one has posted yet lol. And mostly only when something catches my eye like someone wanting to get a monsterously large fish haha.

Ok soo def not gonna go with bumble bee grouper. I was comletly unaware they grow that quickly. i think ill put off changing the tank to salt water as the grouper was the main drive for doing so. Still would like to go salt tho.
thanks for all the advice.

You should still go salt. There are still really cool groupers that are just as aggressive and have just as much personality

Argus grouper
miniatus grouper
clown grouper
Blueline grouper --- one of my favs that could live in your 180 for ever.

Make sure to look around you can still have a badass tank.

^^^ completely agree, there are many other groupers/other preds that would work quite well for life in a 180 as that is still a rather large tank.

ok so i am gonna do a salt tank. I wont be able to start for a couple months tho b/c i have to sell the 2 pbass and 1 oscar. I think im gonna go with the miniatus grouper. there a real nice lookin fish and pretty robust. Q for TheCanuck u stated that the filtration i mentioned was severely inadequate im assuming sump is included. The rena and the fx5 keep the 180 clean with a 16in pbass, 13inpbass, and 11in oscar. so im confused why the setup i mentioned has inadequate filtration for one 15in grouper. please excuse my ignorance i have no experiance with salt.

Alright 2 things...

My comment about not enough filtration was for the BB grouper. Sure you have enough filtration for a 180 heavily stocked but that would have lasted you half a year for a bb grouper

Not to mention a protien skimmer in pred tanks can be more important than any external bio filter. Sometimes even in the tank bio as well.

This is enough filtration for a 180 but i highly recomend getting a badass skimmer..... Miniatus are a stunning grouper but will hide more than others. Make sure you understand each personality before adding them!

Good advice here on the Lanceolatus Grouper. I worked for a LFS 20 years ago and we had one in a 240 for about a year. This grouper soon became too large for this tank. The owner of the store had some contacts at Sea World San Diego and they actually came to the store to pick him up. They put him their predator of the seas tank along with some large Jew Fish and other groupers. I kept tabs on that fish for several years and to say least it was amazing to see him grow to the size of a VW.
