First Salt Tank!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The coralife super skimmer 65 is a good skimmer, I'm running it on my 20 gal nano, only complaint is that it's pretty loud, there are modifications you can make to make it quieter but it's only $100 so its kind of a "ya get what you pay for" deal.

Wrap some paper towel around the air intake tube with a rubber band, just dont cover the intake. Should make it about 50% more quiet.

So do to a change of events I should be able to start setting up the tank much sooner then originally anticipated. When I should started this thread the goal was to have the tank finally starting by April or May. Due to figuring out I'm no longer moving, I can spend that extra money I was saving on the tank :D Also I'm hoping to be getting a decent chunk from taxes and that will be going mostly into the tank.

I recently found two Japanese Dragon Eels for sale for what seems like a fair price for my area ($300). Would it be possible to house a Dragon Eel in a 75 gallon?

How long should I be waiting to put my first fish in a FOWLR system? I know with Reefs you wanna take a while but with just fish is it a but more similar to freshwater? I plan to add bacteria to the tank to help kick start it. As far as bacteria goes which is better, Bio-Spira or Stability by SeaChem?

Is it worthwhile to look into "used" live rock? I'm not too keen on spending $6+ a Lb for rock. Maybe it's the freshwater side of me but it seems like a ripoff :P Should I be looking for any special kind of LR? Is there any area that seems to be better for eels? Any tips on what to look for when buying LR? As far as sand goes, should I buy new or used? What should I be looking at?

I'm all for buying good quality stuff it just makes me hurt a little inside seeing how much new stuff is in regards to Saltwater haha

Finally, I think for my skimmer I'm either gonna go with either the Coralife rated for the 125 gallon or the Octopus Reef, I believe that is rated for 100 gallon. Any suggestions as to which to get?

Depending on how much I have left as well I may look into a RO system. There is a used one for sale for $75 and it's rated at 100GPD which seems like a good price in comparison to new systems.

Actually for Skimmers I forgot about a couple others I was looking at and realized if I don't have a sump I can't use non Hang On skimmers.. Duh! Lol

Which would be best out of these?
Coralife Super Skimmer 125 gallons
EShopps PSK 100H Hang On 100 gallons
Bubble Magus E5 Hang On 100 gallons

I'm leaning towards the Coralofe purely because it's a little stronger from ratings alone.

Dragon morays arent typically a beginner eel. They require great care and maintenance. As for live rock you can buy used if you want to save some cash, just make sure its properly cured and has been in an established tank for a while. Unless you buy old dead rock and mix it with new store bought live rock.

From what I remember your tank will finish cycling in about a month, you can check with water tests to see when your good to go. Seachem stability is a good thing to use to help benefit the cycle process, I still use it every couple weeks or so on my tanks.

The protein skimmer is your choice really. And I have no comments on an RO system as iv never personally used one on my tanks.

So you would recommend skipping on them? I'm not worried if they need extra attention like multiple feedings for example. Is it that they need a mature system or something?

Would a product like this be alright for feeding eels? It has Shrimp,Mussels,Squid, and Cuttlefish. (http://www.seafoodonline.ca/item/S47/1/2/684920-BC) I don't have an Asian market anywhere in my town and because I don't own a car, most of my purchased items will be online for this tank. If I was to feed Mussels and Clams in the shell, do I need to crack them open first or will an eel be able to do it by itself? How long would you estimate 2lbs of food to last you with an Eel?

A word of caution on buying seafood. I was told to make sure it doesn't have any preservative in it, as most fish can't handle it. I have yet to find shrimp that doesn't have some sort of preservative in it though, so if you do, please let me know! ;)

That should ok. Only concern would be preservatives like Kellyfrancis stated. Best foods are the raw frozen seafood section in your local grocery store. Frozen black tiger shrimp tails, other shrimp (dont buy the pre-cooked stuff), squid, various fish fillets. You should be able to get frozen silversides at yours lfs. If you feed clam or mussel, crack the shell first, either completely open or half way to let your moray do some natural feeding. 2lbs of seafood only lasts me couple weeks, you should be able to stretch it twice as long.

Dragons are typically listed as an "advanced aquarist" species. They require perfect water quality, maintenance, and husbandry. Hence not a good starter eel, or starter salt pet. After time has passed, you've found your maintenance routine, and have soaked up as much knowledge about morays as you can, you may be ready to care for such a demanding animal.

The food I linked was actually raw, and "ready to be cooked". I only ever feed raw to my animals, to much preservatives and filler.

So are we sure that just the AC110 for filtration is okay? Do I need a powerhead? Am I just being paranoid because I read more about reefs then FOWLRs? :D

So Dragon is definitely off the list for now. The fact that they're only $300 kills me though! haha

I'd actually do 2 power heads on opposite sides of the tank facing each other but also directed towards the rocks. The whole point of having rocks in the tank is to grow bacteria on them not in the mechanical filtration. Aerobic bacteria needs well oxygenated water flow in order to grow - this bacteria is most important it converts ammonia and nitrite.

As for foods - be aware silversides are very oily, larger fish chunks of non oily fish may be the better option.

What size do you recommend for the powerheads? How many GPH each?
