first shark

Yah it's my first saltwater tank. I've followed my neighbors 90g fowler setup really closely, and I work at my lfs. So i think i know the basics of saltwater.
im sorry man, but i would say dont try a tank this size until you have kept your own salt tank.
im not tryin to bash at all. im just recommending that you work your way up to somethin this big.
after i have had my 90 reef and my 125 pred tank i would never do a tank bigger for salt.
its a great IDEA but once you get into the details of it your goin to loose your mind lol

hey zoodiver,
I really don't like the sound of multi-thousand dollar commercial model. I guess if I need one I'll look into it but for now I'll hold off.
as far as building my own tank I'm fairly well prepared (I think). I have done lots of woodworking/construction, and spent the last few months researching other people's success and failure. As far as i can tell the tanks that have a coat of fiberglass, and a good wooden frame do well. If you (or anybody for that matter) have any opinions on the 3d models of the tank I posted I would be glad to hear them. I plan on posting them in the diy tank section to see if I can't get some feedback. After the wooden box I plan on putting a layer of fiberglass followed by a few coats of some type of epoxy based paint.

I think I lost my mind a while ago:nilly: :)
Thx, but if I lose my mind I might just borrow a few other minds from here, that's what online forums are for right:)

You're looking at 900 gallons to filter. For UV, you'd be looking at a twin 65 watt set up that will be a good 5 feet long for contact time. For a third of that price, you could do a simple ozone injection (I'd suggest DELL) set up that would work with a pt skimmer.

Edit: For mechanical filtration, I'd suggest one (or even two) of these on a 1 hp pump. Have the pump pull off the sump and split into 2 lines, feed into the cartridge, then come back together to the tank. That way you can valve off each on their own to clean them/change them without needing to lose all your mechanical filtration.

Ya i did plan on using separate lines to two different canister filters. I'll look into my canister filter options, but after seeing the results at my lfs my mind is almost set.

I think my 1k system has been easier to manage than any smaller setups I've had. The pars dont swing near as fast or maybe not at all. I run a good size skimmer thats more than able to keep up with what I have, a big sump with plenty of area for benificial bactera to grow on (live rock) and a fair anount of sand. When you start getting into bigger systems it might be like having a pond that is able to take care of itself. It might all be just because of the Rays I have that are near bullet proof. lol

bulletproof rays eh...

yah I've always heard bigger systems are easier to manage. A friend of mine put it this way:

a bottle of poison in a goldfish bowl is impossible to recover from, but a bottle of poison in a lake or pond would hardly harm anything.
I may have too get some of these bullitproof rays lol. They sound like good starter rays. What kind are they and how well would 1-2 of them work in my system? Also where do you recomend getting good sharks and rays in MO?

they are California Round Rays "Urobatis Halleri" I had 8 of them in my system at one time and they did well, now have 4 because I sold the others. They would do well in 900 gallons, as far as getting them in Mo. I have no idea. I bought my first one in St. Louis from a guy that sells out of his basement but cant remember his name and btw thats not even 4 hours from me. I bought some Rays from a guy on here but were not in good shape when I got them and did'nt survive. Someone around St. Louis should be able to get them in for you.

sweet will def be looking into the cali rounds. I've heard good things about them. That is so sad about your rays some people really shouldn't be in the business of selling fish.
thx for your help

if you could make the tank bigger it would help the smoothhounds they need at least two body lengths to be able to swim around properly. also smoothhounds tend to jump i had one that jumped out of my tank. that tank would be fine for the bamboos sharks they are less active
