My roommate and I have a 130g running as an amazonian style tank which is slowly being taken down to be rescaped for different fish. Basically were looking to simplify our setup, what is currently a planted tank we want to switch to basically sand/rock/driftwood(sounds lame when listed but it would be scaped to look quite nice and provide lots of hiding areas), no more live plants...easier upkeep.
Been considering a couple different options, a large puffer, or more recently thought of bichirs, or knife fish. Im just looking for some suggestions from those of you who are keeping such fish currently or just have lots of knowledge on them and might want to help with some input as to what we should stock it with. Any ideas are appreciated and welcomed.
Personally i've seemed to follow in MsJinkzd's footsteps as far as what inhabitants i keep....i really enjoy the nano fish and even more so the inverts. I havent kept large fish yet but i dont think ill have much trouble, i do my best to keep my fish happy and do research when i want to keep something ive not kept before, but i like to start with suggestions from those who are already experienced.

If your ok with a single fish, a fahaka puffer would be great. They get big, super personable and respond to humans like no other fish. Only thing with puffers is make sure you provide food with a shell like raw shrimp or clams from the grocery store.

Crayfish okay for the puffers?

Well since, your not having plants I'd like the idea of having polypterus and silverdollars. You could mix 2-3 poly delhezi, endli endli, ornate, and so on. Thenfor silverdollars redhooks, regular, and black bar. This would make a great show tank.

i say piranhas but thats me i like those little guys other than those you could do something with cichlids or oddballs like bichirs

So you have a 130......I like the idea of puffers......Mbu puffer will fill out the 130 perfectly.......Mbu's grow to a length of 2ft...They are very owner responsive.......Knife fish get really long....For example, the Aba Aba can reach 5-6 feet in length and weigh up to 40 pounds.....Black ghost knifefish get to reach 25-30 inches long.........Why not try purchasing a showcase tankbuster such as a Red Devil, Dovii, or even an Oscar.....A 130 will safely hold two oscars.........

Please whatever you do DO NOT GET AN MBU for that 130G... a MBU needs at least 800G+ tank, since not only do they reach 3ft+ but they are also major crap factories...

If you want a large puffer, i would go with a Fahaka, very very personable fish with lots to offer... although you more than likely won't be able to put in any tankmates... although you won't really need them either with puffer in the tank...

Thanks for the responses thus far. A Fahaka puffer was the 1st thought, but not the last, also looked into the Mbu puffer but found it needs a bigger home than i can provide so thats out unfortunately...as far as oscars go, i dont care for them too much, not my favorite fish. Bichirs and/or knifefish was a second thought.
